Fishing & Spearfishing
Fishing and spearfishing are the two gathering abilities of the fisher. By seeking out fishable waters throughout Eorzea, these masters of rod and reel are able to hook and land all manner of aquatic life from both the depths and the shallows.
For details on gathering catalysts, the items required for the melding of materia, please refer to Materia.

Fishing
1. Changing to the Fisher Class
With the Armoury system, becoming a fisher is as simple as equipping the proper piece of equipment. Go to main menu » Gear, and equip a fisher’s primary tool in the main hand slot. Also be sure to equip a lure or bait in the pack slot.
* Different fish are attracted to different tackle. Using well-suited tackle will reduce the amount of time before a bite.

2. Finding Fishable Waters
Fishable waters are denoted by the presence of a fishing icon in the micro menu. When a player attains a high enough level, certain fisher abilities will allow for the precise tracking of points known as schools of fish—places where fishing is significantly easier. These abilities will provide detailed information regarding distance and direction in the log. Make use of these abilities to easily locate a region’s aquatic life.
3. Making Preparations
Use the keyboard’s ↑ and ↓ directional keys or the gamepad’s Target/Open Menu controls to determine at what depth to fish and press the Enter key or the Select/Confirm button. Then choose the Wait option from the Aim window to standby until a fish strikes.
The depth at which a player chooses to fish determines what types of fish can be caught.
4. Waiting for a Bite
After a depth is selected, there is a short waiting period within which a fish may bite. Should the log indicate that a fish has bitten, select the Jig command from the Approach window to attempt to hook and reel it in.
If the log displays that there is a nibble on the line, the Wait option can be selected from the Approach window to allow more time for the fish to bite. A bite will increase the chances of success when reeling in a fish.
The log will also indicate if nothing has bitten the line. After several rounds of such failed attempts, players may wish to select a different lure or bait, or perhaps confirm that the area in which they are fishing is appropriate to their current level.

5. Landing the Fish
A gauge and moving cursor will appear representing how the rod is worked to bring in the fish. The moving cursor can be stopped at any point by pressing the Enter key or the Select/Confirm button. Each attempt will reduce the fishing attempt’s Remainder value. A single attempt ends when this value reaches zero.
Moving the rod inappropriately will not tire the fish, making it more difficult to catch.
There is a limit on the number of times you can fish from any given school of fish. This limit does not exist for regular fishable waters. A school of fish will disappear when its limit is reached, and the location will then revert to being regular fishable waters.

Finding the “Sweet Spot”
Fishing attempts will result in system messages being displayed telling how much stamina a hooked fish has remaining. If the manner in which you moved the rod does not yield a message beginning with the phrase, The fish has tired..., then the fish cannot be reeled in.
In addition, any rod movement after the first will provide players with another message containing a hint as to whether or not they have gotten closer to such “sweet spot” that will tire the fish. Players are encouraged to make use of these hints to improve their next movement’s chances of success.

The blue cursor represents where the last movement was made.
Spearfishing
1. Equipping the Proper Gear
Spearfishing requires that a fisher’s secondary tool be equipped in the off hand. Further, as spearfishing can only be engaged in while a fisher, a fisher’s primary tool must simultaneously be equipped in the main hand.

2. Finding Shallow Waters
Spearfishing points are known as shallow waters, and are marked on the game screen by a small flashing light. The location of shallow waters is also designated by the presence of an icon on the minimap.

3. Stabbing Away
Approaching shallow waters will cause the Spearfishing option to appear in the Interactions menu. Selecting this will execute a spearfishing attempt that will yield items when successful.
A single successful spearfishing attempt will deplete a shallow waters point, but will cause another point to appear somewhere nearby. After several attempts in the same vicinity, players will temporarily be unable to spearfish there again. When this happens, seek out a new gathering point elsewhere.
