Synthesis
Synthesis
For details on how to repair gear, please refer to Repair.
Synthesis is the act of creating items, and is engaged in by all classes within the Discipline of the Hand.* By using certain shards and crystals together with all manner of materials, crafters are able to create the food, weapons, armor, and myriad other wares that Eorzea demands. As crafters develop their skills and rise in level, they will be able to create high-quality (HQ) items and gain access to a wider range of recipes.
The current Discipline of the Hand classes available are carpenter, blacksmith, armorer, goldsmith, leatherworker, weaver, alchemist, and culinarian.

Synthesizing
1. Changing to a Crafting Class and Beginning the Synthesis
With the Armoury system, changing to a crafting class is as simple as equipping the proper piece of equipment. Go to main menu ≫ Gear, and equip a primary tool of the desired class in the main hand slot. If necessary, also equip the appropriate secondary tool in the off hand slot. Doing so will cause the Synthesize command to appear in the Interactions menu. Select this option to begin the synthesis process.

2. Preparing the Materials
Place the ingredients required for the current synthesis in the slots found under the label Materials in the synthesis interface. The Recipes button can be pressed to bring up a history of both recently used recipes and recipes recently learned from levequests. Selecting a recipe from either of these lists will also automatically fill the material slots with the necessary items.
The Recipes list contains the eight most recently used recipes for each crafting class, as well as the eight most recently awarded recipes from levequests.
When a player possessing varying qualities of a single material selects a synthesis recipe from the Recipes list, the lowest quality item will be used first. This item can be changed manually, if the player wishes. Not only do high-quality items have higher durability, but they also increase the chance of creating a higher quality end product.
Materials (including crystals) for local levequests are provided by either the client or the Adventurers’ Guild, and therefore players need not use any of their own items. However, if a player is inclined, he may replace the items automatically set with high-quality items he possesses (which will be removed from the inventory once the synthesis begins).

In addition, players can select Requested Items to display a list of active local levequests. Selecting a levequest from this list will also automatically place the materials required for that synthesis into the slots.

Materials and crystals used for local levequest synthesis are provided by client NPCs, and are therefore not consumed from a player’s inventory. Should an automatically set material be replaced with a higher quality version of the same item from a player’s inventory, however, it will be consumed as normal.

3. Selecting a Tool and Item
Choose Main Hand or Off Hand to determine which tool to use for the synthesis. After doing so, a list of all possible items that can be crafted using that tool with the currently selected materials will appear. Select the item to be synthesized from this list.
The shards and crystals consumed by a recipe are automatically removed from a player’s inventory when the synthesis is begun. Shards and crystals in a player’s possession will not be used should they fall short of the required amount, as the synthesis cannot be started.

4. Progressing to 100% and Choosing Commands
Each command executed during synthesis will have an impact on progress, durability, and quality values. The goal is to achieve 100% progress before durability reaches zero. Using the Wait option, will cause only durability to decline. Should durability fall to zero before achieving 100% progress, the synthesis will end in failure.

5. Keeping the Item or Trying for High Quality
Reaching 100% Progress and selecting Finish within the time limit completes the new item. At this point, players may have a chance of creating a high-quality (HQ) item, depending on the HQ odds.
If the HQ odds are 1% or better, players will have the option of selecting either Finish or Double Down. By electing to double down, the player takes a chance on creating an HQ item at the risk of losing the completed item if the attempt fails. Please note that the Double Down option simply indicates that the odds of creating an HQ item are 1% or better; it does not mean that the item is already HQ.
Differences Between Tools
Synthesis can be performed using either a main hand tool or an off hand tool. Attributes vary from tool to tool, as do the final results each yields when ending a synthesis recipe, the critical moment when such factors as quality and quantity are determined. Though there are numerous possibilities, one example would be that using a main hand tool may serve to increase the quality of an item, while using an off hand tool for the same synthesis may increase the final quantity produced. There may even be cases where the same recipe yields different items depending on whether or not a main or off hand tool is used.

Synthesis Facilities
Within the guilds located in each major city, as well as at certain aetheryte camps, are synthesis facilities to which access may be gained by paying a gil fee. Obtaining access to such facilities will endow players with a temporary status that increases the chances of success for commands executed during synthesis.

Treatises
Some recipes will be accompanied with the name of a treatise such as Fletchery Training or Chainweaving Training. While synthesis can be conducted without first obtaining these books, the durability of the items used during crafting will drop significantly with each command. Treatises can be purchased in guildshops with guild marks.
The Synthesis Interface

1. Progress
Progress represents how near or far the synthesis is to completion. This value increases with the execution of commands until it reaches 100%, at which point the synthesis process is complete.

2. Durability
Durability represents the remaining integrity of the synthesis materials. This value decreases with the execution of commands. Should this value reach zero, the synthesis will end in failure.

3. Quality
When this value exceeds a certain amount, the odds that an HQ item will be created are increased. Furthermore, the experience point bonus received for crafting the item increases proportional to quality.
While carrying out synthesis for local levequests, crafted items with a high quality value will result in a high assessment by the guildleve client, and ultimately greater rewards for the player.

4. Commands
Standard Synthesis
As its name implies, standard synthesis is a “normal” type of crafting. Though it still reduces durability to a certain degree, it has a comparatively higher rate of success overall. It is also relatively stable, as the failure of commands during standard synthesis will have less of a negative impact on durability.
Quality does not increase when standard synthesis fails.

Rapid Synthesis
Success during rapid synthesis will significantly increase the progress of the crafting process while only slightly reducing durability. Should the state of the synthesis become unfavorable, however, the durability value will be greatly diminished. Rapid synthesis can be effective for turning around a failing synthesis with little durability remaining, or for saving durability to attempt careful synthesis later on.
Quality does not increase when using rapid synthesis.

Careful Synthesis
Careful synthesis serves to greatly enhance the quality value when successful, but reduces durability to a greater extent than standard or rapid synthesis. It is best used when attempting to craft a high-quality item.

Wait
Waiting means that the crafter temporarily stays his hand while the stability of the material ingredients (see below) stabilizes or improves. Extensive waiting will cause the durability value to decrease.
New commands may be added depending on the synthesis abilities currently set.

The Stability of Synthesis Materials
The stability of synthesis materials is represented by the color of the glowing light displayed onscreen while crafting. Each command executed has an effect on stability.
When the glowing light is white, the materials are extremely stable, and the chances of success of synthesis commands are increased. The light may also turn from yellow, to red, to multiple colors flashing rapidly. Though these states represent progressively lower chances of success when executing commands, they also indicate times at which the quality of the synthesis can most easily be enhanced, therefore increasing the likelihood of creating a high-quality item.
